MISS INDIAS AND THEIR BOLLYWOOD BREAKS

The glamorous industry of Bollywood owes a lot to the Miss India pageant. A talent house that has produced some of the greatest stars Bollywood has ever witnessed, it is undoubtedly one of the biggest and best grooming centers.

Nutan and Zeenat Aman were one of the first in the clique of Miss Indias to have successful careers as Bollywood actresses. Nutan won the Miss India title in 1952 and rose to cinematic fame with films like Seema, Bandini and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. She won several Filmfare Best Actress Awards was later awarded a Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1974. In 1970, Zeenat Aman clinched the Miss India Pacific crown after finishing third in the Miss India contest. She then grooved to the tunes of Dum Maro Dum for Dev Anand's film Hare Rama Hare Krishna and went on to win the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Her unconventionally sexy disposition unsettled many but she did earn a significant place for herself in the world of films. The rest simply followed suit.

Sangeeta Bijlani (Miss India, 1980) started off with television commercial advertisements and then moved on to mainstream films. She had a short but noticeable stint in Bollywood and soon married former ex-captain of the Indian cricket team, Mohammad Azharuddin. The 1980s saw the rise of yet another Miss India, Juhi Chawla. She was and continues to be as vivacious as ever. She has an indefinite list of successful movies to her name.

The Miss India title is not simply about crowning glory. It is, in fact, a key to the door of opportunities and Bollywood seems like the perfect platform to learn, grow and become someone. It has lent a definitive oomph factor to the Indian film industry by alleviating the scope for both beauty and talent.

1994 was a golden year for the Miss India pageant. Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe crown in Philippines and in the same year, Aishwarya Rai triumphed in the Miss World title in South Africa. Both Sushmita and Aishwarya debuted in Bollywood almost simultaneously (in 1996 and 1997 respectively) and from then onwards, they have only excelled. While Sushmita Sen bagged almost five Best Supporting Actress awards in her acting tenure, Aishwarya was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award twice, besides several other national and international recognitions.

The millennium year 2000 was once again notable for India when the country scored a hat-trick at a golden year for India. While Lara Dutta won the title of Miss Universe in Cyprus, Priyanka Chopra clinched the Miss World title and Dia Mirza secured the title of Miss Asia Pacific. A year after the title, Dia made her film debut with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein opposite R Madhavan, and just three years later, both Lara and Prinyanka made their Bollywood debut in 2003 with the film Andaz, starring opposite Akshay Kumar. Since then, all three of them have won several accolades for their exemplary work in Hindi cinema. Priyanka, of course, has gone a notch higher to make her debut in singing, thus proving an all-rounder side to her charismatic personality.

Miss India has been a stepping stone for many other title winners to try their luck at acting in films. And the trend continues in the present day. Miss India Earth 2012 Prachi Mishra who is busy shooting for her first Bollywood film, Zaalim Dilli, says "When I joined Miss India, the crown was the only thing on my mind. But as things progressed I realised wherever I went, people had started recognising me. They came to know me by my Miss India title and this helps a lot. When I go to meet a director or a writer I am not made to wait. Also, people know that you come from a background as strong as Miss India, so they don't misguide you or mistreat you in any way." Miss India Earth 2011, Hasleen Kaur seems to be treading the same steady path to stardom. She too has recently bagged a role in Suneel Darshan's film Karle Pyar Karle, in which she will be paired opposite the director's son, Shiv Darshan.

2012 was Femina Miss India 2007 Esha Gupta's when she appeared in not one, not two, but three films. She debuted with Kunal Deshmukj's Jannat 2, moved on to Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3D and finally Prakash Jha's Chakravyuh. Simran Kaur Mundi, Femina Miss India Universe 2008 made her Bollywood debut with the film 'Jo Hum Chahein' in 2011 opposite newcomer Sunny Gill, her next film 'Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi' produced by Ekta Kapoor and Bejoy Nambiar is set to release in June 2013.

Other notable Miss Indias who ventured into Bollywood

Meenakshi Seshadri was just 17 when she won the Miss India contest in 1981. Naturally, she was the youngest woman to be crowned Miss India. She is best known for her role in Hindi film 'Damini' that went on to become a mega-success and received a number of awards including the coveted National Film Award. Meenakshi won accolades for her versatility and display of varied sets of emotions on screen.

Namrata Shirodkar was crowned Miss India in the year 1993. She represented India in the Miss Universe pageant and finished fifth. She then featured in the Bollywood film 'Hero Hindustani' where she was the lead actress opposite Arshad Warsi.

Gul Panag won the Miss India title in 1999, and was crowned Miss Beautiful Smile at the same pageant. Gul too tried her luck in films and her role of an independent Muslim woman in Nagesh Kukunoor's film 'Dor' (2006) was acclaimed critically.

Celina Jaitley won Femina Miss India 2001 and Miss Margo Beautiful Skin; she made her film debut in Feroz Khan's Janasheen opposite Fardeen Khan in 2003. Celina got married to an Austrian businessman Peter Haag and has twin boys.

Neha Dhupia entered Bollywood after winning Femina Miss India title in 2002. She rose to fame with her role in the film 'Julie' where she played the role of a high profile escort.

Tanushree Dutta the bong beauty won Femina Miss India Universe 2004. She made her Bollywood debut in 2005 appearing in 'Aashiq Banaya Apne'. Here she played a role of a college girl Sneha who was the love interest of the two actors Sonu Sood and Emraan Hashmi.

Femina Miss India World 2004 Sayali Bhagat was cast opposite Emraan Hashmi and Geeta Basra in the Bollywood film 'The Train'.

Sarah-Jane Dias was the winner of Femina Miss India 2007. She recently appeared in the Hindi movie 'Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum' opposite Ritesh Deshmukh in 2012. Sarah will be next seen in Atul Agnihotri's next film.

MISS INDIAS RULE THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

Miss Indias have time and again proved their worth and shone at the International stage in terms of beauty pageants, fashion weeks, product endorsements and such like. We discuss a few Miss Indias who've registered an International presence over the years and made India proud with their success stories.

Nicole Faria crowned Miss Earth 2010
It was a rejoicing moment for India when the 23-year-old Nicole Faria created history by becoming the first ever Indian woman to be crowned Miss Earth in 2010. The beauty pageant held in Vietnam had other significant accolades coming Nicole's way. She clinched the Miss Talent title, the first special award in the 10th Miss Earth pageant and led India from the front. An absolute stunner in a shimmering white and gold dress, Nicole effortlessly superseded the other 84 finalists in the race to becoming the next Miss Earth. Nicole did not stop short at the glitterati of the International stage; she successfully defined the true meaning of being a 'beauty with a purpose' in her endeavours later. She performed a belly dance that combined Oriental and Middle Eastern style in an event and helped raise a huge sum of VND100 million that was donated to the HCM City Red Cross to support flood victims in the central region of Vietnam.

Another exemplary Miss India, Kanishtha Dhankhar who was adjudged Miss India World 2011, may have missed the crown at the International pageant but that could not stop her from making her presence felt at the international world of fashion and glamour. Back from a milestone experience in the New York City where she walked the ramp at the New York Fashion Week Summer/Spring '13, Kanishtha Dhankhar could not thank her stars enough. Recognition at the international fashion industry means a lot to a model and a beauty queen alike; and for Kanishtha too, the inexplicable realisation of being in the Fashion capital of the world was nothing less than a watershed moment in her career. When we asked her about her experience, she told us, "New York Fashion Week was absolutely amazing. It was like a dream come true. It has always been something I have wanted to do, and to be a part of it was incredible. I walked for the Project Runway fashion week season 10 Show with Heidi Klum, Haus Alkire, Cesar Galindo, Etro, and Showroom for Sheena Trivedi and Lorry Newhouse. The clothes were all very different from each other. I loved the beautiful light pastel elegant clothes designed by Nina Skarra and also fell in love with the strong, young modern prints and shapes by Haus Alkire".

Miss Indias have time and again proved their mettle at the International stage with immense confidence, a dash of sensuality and of course oodles of talent. Parvathy Omanakuttan represented India in the 58th Miss World Final and was declared the First Runner up while Miss Russia Ksenia Sukhinova took away the crown home. Speaking of the subtitles, she was one among the top five finalists of Miss World 2008 Beach Beauty contests in addition to securing a second place for Miss World Top Model contest held in December 2008.

Lara Dutta scores the highest in Q & A round
At Miss Universe 2000 in Cyprus, Lara Dutta took everyone's breath away as she sashayed down the runway in a shimmery red evening gown in full radiance. She was the one to secure the highest score in the swimsuit competition and her final answer awarded her the highest points. It was a phenomenal win for Lara as most judges on the panel credited her 9.99 mark making her individual score the highest in the history of the Miss Universe contest. Her historic win led to her appointment as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. Dia Mirza and Priyanka Chopra completed the thread of three consecutive wins by clinching the Miss Asia Pacific and Miss World titles respectively in the year 2000.

Diana Hayden crowned Miss World 1997
Diana Hayden became the third Indian woman to win the Miss World crown after Reita Faria and Aishwarya Rai in 1966 and 1994 respectively. An eighth standard dropout who went on to be crowned the most beautiful woman in the world in 1997, Diana Hayden is not just beauty personified; she is a traveller, grooming expert, motivational speaker, philanthropist and an avid reader. On the International space, as a global representative, Diana studied at the Drama Studio London and was closely associated with the works of Shakespeare; so much so that she debuted in Shakespeare's 'Othello' in South Africa in 2006. During the final Q & A round at the Miss World, Diana quoted poet W.B. Yeats and impressed the judges with her well argued answer. Her much talked about stint with Indian television reality show Bigg Boss season 2 won her a lot more fans and admirers.

Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai started it all
She took the world by storm by becoming the first ever Miss India to win the Miss Universe crown by defeating a litany of potential beauties on the International stage. During the competition, Sushmita Sen progressed gradually from being ranked third overall in the preliminaries to securing the place second, fifth and third in the swimsuit, interview, and evening gown semi-final competitions respectively. Aishwarya Rai, the most beautiful woman in the world established her stronghold in the International world with Hollywood movies, product endorsements and regular attendance at International Award ceremonies and functions among other projects. These were the two beauties, who, in a way encouraged aspiring Miss Indias to shine on the global fashion map.

Pooja Chitgopekar, Amruta Patki, Shonal Rawat, Shonali Nagrani, Tina Chatwal and Yukta Mookhey are among other Miss Indias who may have missed the International titles by a whisker but have nonetheless floored the panel of judges and spectators with their witty responses, remarkable performances and elegance.

POND’S FEMINA MISS INDIA 2013 FINALISTS VIE FOR SUB-CONTEST CROWNS

Pond's Femina Miss India finalists

Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 announced the sub-contest winners at a gleaming ceremony at The Westin Mumbai Garden City in Mumbai. A string of sub-contests were held as a build-up to the grand finale, wherein the finalists got a chance to showcase their talent, and in addition groom themselves better for the ultimate crown.

The 23 finalists who are being trained and groomed meticulously by stalwarts of the fashion and glamour industry contested for some of the most popular and iconic sub-titles such as 'Pond's Femina Miss Glowing Skin', 'Yamaha Miss Adventurous', PCJ Timesless Beauty, 'Enhance Femina Miss Body Beautiful', 'Tresemme Femina Miss Stylish Hair', 'Westin Femina Miss Congeniality' and 'Femina Miss Talented' amongst others.

The contestants were judged for these sub-contests over the last month of their preparation and grooming where they showcased their best flairs and participated ardently to compete for these titles.

Head honchos of various Brands were seen at the event to felicitate the Sub-contest winners. A blend of fun and informative activities were conducted for the judging process. The task for 'Yamaha Ray Femina Miss Adventurous' contest had the finalists compete against each other to complete an adventurous treasure-hunt to win the sub-title which brought out the zeal, determination and perseverance of the contestants in comparison to the activity for 'Sanofi Pasteur Femina Miss Beauty for Health' contest wherein the finalists spent time with kids at an NGO and expressed their thoughts on a canvas to create immunization awareness in the society which showcased their benevolent side. The finalists stunned everyone with their breath-taking
performances for Femina Miss Talented sub-contest, where they were seen displaying their best talents.
